There is nothing else necessary for this levitation to take place. The magnet between the bismuth crystals is floating freely, touching nothing but air, and it will stay that way permanently. These crystals are solid bismuth, and this little arrangement achieves perfect balance with this amazing metal's force. * Please note that the base magnets might vary slightly from the photos depending on the availability of the magnets at the time of purchase.

How? Bismuth is diamagnetic, repelling both of the magnet's poles' (north and south) equally. The mahogany base contains a special array of magnets. This creates a magnetic field that works with the bismuth's diamagnetism to hold the little magnet in a small pocket of stability.

It's very easy to set up. Just put the piece on a semi-level surface. Slip your magnet in between the crystals. Then adjust the crystals on either side until you achieve balance.
