One at a time, this large bismuth maglev is capable of floating spherical and square magnets. These little magnets permanently escape the gravity of our planet without leaving its atmosphere. Hot air balloons, airplanes, electromagnetic lifted globes -these are all impressive devices. What makes these bismuth maglevs different is that they require no power - ever. In this little device I have capitalized on the little known force of diamagnetism, and it is truly amazing. This handcrafted bismuth kinetic art sculpture features the diamagnetic flotation of a cube, sphere or disc magnet. The magnet touches nothing but air. The arrangement requires no power of any kind, just a balancing of two bismuth crystals and two magnets.

Bismuth is not magnetic - it's diamagnetic. It repels the north and south poles of magnets equally. In my arrangement, the top magnet attracts the small magnet with enough force to lighten it. The diamagnetic force of the bottom bismuth crystal can then push the little cube or sphere off its surface. The magnet rises, but not so high that it gets sucked all the way up as it would without the bismuth. The top crystal, while not necessary, provides stability, and allows a fraction of a millimeter extra lift.

I created this sculpture to highlight the amazingly ordered structure of the bismuth crystal. It's cut from a solid chunk of bismuth ingot. There is no construction, no synthesis and no applied color. It's approximately 13 inches tall including the crown magnet. Perfect for anyone who loves unique art that is both awe-inspiring and stunning to view! A true conversation piece, it provides a dramatic accent to any room or office space.

It's very easy to set up. Just put the piece on a semi-level surface. Slip the small magnet in either the rectangular slot or circular hole (this sculpture can float a magnet in either hole, just not at the same time). Use the top crown magnet to adjust the floating magnet between the crystals. If the floating magnet is too low, twist the crown magnet clockwise. If it's too high, twist the crown magnet counter-clockwise.
